Here I have discussed some major ways that will help you when you are unable to login to Windows after a password reset and solve the problem. So, check the following steps.
1) Restart Your Device
When you can’t log in to Windows after changing your Microsoft password, try restarting your device.
Now try to log in to your Microsoft account. If you cannot, then go to the next solution.
2) Check Your Internet Connection
If you have changed the Microsoft account’s password recently, then your computer might take some time to register it.
So, check if you are connected to the internet before moving on to the next solution.
A good network connection will allow your device to register the newly set password quickly.

3) Run Start Up Repair
Running a startup repair can also help you when you are unable to log in to Windows after a password reset.
So, follow the steps to run a startup repair:
- Hold the Shift button and restart your PC from the Sign-in screen. This will open the Advanced Startup Recovery menu.
- Choose Troubleshoot from the given options.
- From Advanced Options select Startup Repair. This will initiate Windows to run the repairing process.
- Wait till the process is completed. Restart your computer and check if you can log in to your Microsoft account now. If not then go to the next solution.
4) Boot Into Safe Mode
Safe mode provides you with minimal functionalities. This is a great option for finding out the actual problem of why you cannot log in to your account.
Now follow the steps to know how to enter Safe Mode:
Follow the steps described in the above solution to get into the Advanced Startup Recovery Menu and select Troubleshoot option.
- From the Advanced options now select Startup Settings.
- Press the F5 key on your keyboard for entering Safe Mode with the networking option.
- After entering into Safe Mode go to the next methods.
5) Disable The Fast Startup
We enable the fast Startup feature to boot the PC faster.
But if you can’t log in to Windows after changing your Microsoft password, then disable this fast startup feature. This can help you fix the problem.
Now follow the steps to disable Windows fast startup feature:
- Launch Windows Run utility by pressing Windows + R keys.
- Copy & paste: powercfg.cpl in the Run command box. Press Enter.
- Click on Choose what power buttons do option.
- Select the Change settings that are currently an unavailable option as I have shown in the picture below.
- Uncheck the box next to Turn on the Fast Start-Up (Recommended) option and click on the Save changes option.
- Close the Windows and restart your PC. Now check if you can sign in to your Windows 10 account without any problem. If not, then follow the next steps.
6) Reset Your Password
If you still cannot log in using your password, then try resetting your Microsoft account password again.
To do that, enter your Microsoft account username on the login screen.
If you are using multiple accounts then select the one that you want to reset.
Click on the ‘I forgot my password’ option and follow the on-screen instructions to set a new password.
7) Use A New Account To Sign In
If your user account somehow got corrupted, then you won’t be able to sign in to your Microsoft account after changing the password.
So, creating a new user account can solve this problem. So, follow the steps to create a Microsoft Account:
- Press Windows + I keys to open Windows Settings and select Accounts.
- Click on the Family & other users option from the left panel.
- Select Add someone else to this PC option. Next click on I doesn’t have this person’s sign-in information option.
- From the next window, enter a username and click on the Next option.
Now try to log in from this account and you should not have this problem now.
8) Run A SFC And DISM Scans
After creating a new user account if you still cannot log into it using the new password, then the corrupted system files can be the culprit.
To scan and fix the missing or corrupted system files run an SFC scan.
Sometimes the Windows image may get corrupted and cause these kinds of issues. Deployment Image & Servicing Management or DISM scan repairs Windows corrupted image.
So, run the SFC and DISM scans and restart your computer. Check if this has fixed the problem else move to the next solution.
9) Update Your Windows
If you have not updated your Windows for a long time then outdated Windows can be the reason why you cannot log into your user account.
But if you have recently updated your Windows then you can skip this step.
- Open Windows Settings and select Update & Security.
- Click on Windows Update and select Check for updates from the right panel.
- Wait for the installation process to get completed. Restart your PC after that. This should fix the problem.
