YouTube is one of the most popular websites on the internet right now, and rightly so as you are most likely to find a video related to nearly anything on the site. YouTube boasts of very heavy traffic of users, and hosts videos from many reputable content creators, producing professional-level videos.
You can directly share videos from YouTube, with the use of the URL for the same. However, if you want to share something large, YouTube lets you send snippets of the video that you want to share. Here, I shall discuss how to send parts of a video using a YouTube link with start and end time.
YouTube Link With Start And End Time
There are 2 ways to share a video from YouTube with start and end time, a shorter way, and a long way. Read here how to end a YouTube video at a certain time.
Method 1: Using The Share Button
There is a share button on the YouTube website, that directly copies the URL for you in a separate dialog box. You can use this to share a video from YouTube linked to time, sending the video so that it starts at the specified time.
- Open the YouTube page of the video that you want to share.
- Locate and click on the Share button.
- In the dialog box that opens with the link that can be shared, check the box next to ‘Start at’.
- In the entry space next to Start at, enter the time that you want the video to start from when you share.
- Click on the dialog box to exit the editor, and you shall see the link is modified slightly.
- Now, click on the Copy button to copy the YouTube timestamp link.
This easy trick allows you to share a video from YouTube with start time embedded into the link. However, there is another way to do this, which can allow you to share the video from YouTube with start and end time embedded in the link.
Note: If you are playing the video, you can also copy the URL at the current time, by selecting the ‘Copy video URL at current time’ from right-click context menu on the video.
Method 2: Modify The URL For The Video
To edit the timestamp link manually, follow these steps:
- Go to the YouTube page of the video that you wish to share.
- Copy the non-shortened link of the video from the browser address bar. You will notice that there already exists a query string (?) in the link.
- Paste this link where you wish to share it, or in a text editor like notepad.
- Suppose you wish to start the video after 35 seconds into the video, add the following text at the end of the link that you just copied:
&t=35s
If you wish to start a video after 1 minute and 10 seconds, paste the following text at the end:
&t=1m10s - Share the modified link to where you wish to send it.
How To Embed YouTube Start And End Time
If you own a website and wish to embed a part of a YouTube video with a specific start and end times, there is a simple way of doing that as well.
- Open the YouTube page of the video that you want to share.
- Locate and click on the Share
- Click on the Embed option. A new dialog box with the embed link for the video should open.
- In the box that contains your embed code, you can use the following at the end of the URL to define start and end points (replacing <seconds> with a value in seconds):
?start=<seconds>&end=<seconds>
For example the following embed shall start at 30s and end at 50s:
<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/_6zxDH3fiy4?start=30&end=50″ frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>
Note: when adding query strings, remember that for any URL, the first query string should always begin with a question mark (?). if the shortened URL does not already contain the ‘?’ query, you will need to add the YouTube link to time query preceding with a ‘?’. For complete links, you need to use the ampersand (&) query.
Conclusion
