This is a very thorough and easy to read with your screenshots — and provides several possible fixes for this problem. I am very impressed by how you walk through the steps — for someone like myself who is reasonably PC-literate, but not a tech/geek by any stretch.
I haven’t tried any of your suggestions yet, but will later this morning and I’ll comment on whether/which one of them worked … (hopefully one will have worked).
Thank you again — from an amateur self-help user.

Thhe problem seems to be a bug in either Windows 10 or the brother scan software. I can scan to the Cloud, to email, but not to PC.

Ken, This was working fine on our systems until Windows 10 did a major update. Now it prints but systems do not show up on the printer for scanning, even with firewall turned off during re-install of Brother software. It seems to be Windows 10.

I’ve tried the easy steps, but while my brother printer works fine, the PC is not connected to the Scanner. I’m on Windows 10 and am not sure why the scanner does not work (PC simply says to connect a scanner)

It would have been nice if Brother had left all the software for my printer online instead of just the uninstall software. Now there is no driver download, no Brother software utilities download. I’m going to have to connect my Windows 7 computer to be able to scan because I don’t know where the original disc with the scanning software is anymore and I don’t have days to waste finding it.
Nan Alvord says
Brother printer (MFC-J485DW) would print but not scan with new Windows 11 laptop. After days of searching the web for answers, fiddling with Windows firewall, and mumbling a lot I came upon the Brothers Windows 11 website with a list driver package downloads for certain models, mine included. After uninstalling previous software, I installed new drivers from Brothers site. Still would not scan. Checked scanner in Brother Utilities and found auto-repair button which reconfigured the scanner drivers. FINALLY victory! Forgive me if my use of terminology is not precisely correct. I am an 87 yo woman with no computer education. If I can do it, anyone can.
