Laptop Won’t Shut Down – How To Resolve ?

When your laptop won’t shut down immediately after installing Windows 10, it can be a software or hardware-related issue.

In today’s article, I am going to throw light on the probable reasons that raise the problem and suggest some effective ways to fix the issue.

According to some users, the laptop won’t shut down but restarts or it does not start with the lid closed.

Sometimes the problem is caused by the power settings and when you try turning off the laptop using the power button.

Few users encountered a black screen when shutting down their laptops.

This problem is oriented with the default Windows feature – Hybrid Shutdown.

Besides decreasing the time to shut down, this feature may generate other problems. Your laptop may not hibernate, restart, or lock also.

So, your system freezes or hangs when you shut them down. For solving the issue if you disable such features, the kernel session will not hibernate on shutdown instead it will close completely.

How To Fix Laptop Won’t Shut Down Issue?

Let us now discuss the ways to fix the issue when your laptop won’t shut down.

Fix 1: Manually Disable The Hybrid Shutdown Feature

As I was discussing before, Windows 10 laptop won’t shut down issue may be caused because of the hybrid shutdown feature.  So, manually disabling the hybrid solution may resolve the issue.

Follow the steps mentioned below to execute the task:

Step 1: Go to the Start menu and enter the Control Panel to open the window. Now, go to the Power Options.

Step 2: Now from the displayed window, select the Choose what the power buttons do option.

Step 3: Now go to the Define Power Buttons And Turn On The Password Protection option and change the currently unavailable settings.

Step 4: Next move on to shut down the settings and uncheck the Turn On Fast Startup check box for disabling the Hybrid Shutdown feature.

Save your changes and come out of the window. Now check if your problem got resolved.

Fix 2:  Use Windows Update Troubleshooter

When you update your windows, it may also create some problems like Windows 10 laptop not shutting down.

To get comprehensive help you may use a Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow the process mentioned below to do the task:

Step 1: Go to the Start menu and enter the Control Panel to open the window. Now from the given options, choose Troubleshooting.

Step 2: Go to the menu for opening the View all panel. Scroll down the displayed option to choose Windows Update from the options.

Step 3: When your Troubleshooter window will open, choose the Advanced button, and Run it as an administrator.

Step 4: Now the Troubleshooting process will restart. Hit the Next button to start scanning.

After the scanning procedure is completed, check if the issue got addressed.

Fix 3: Check Your BIOS Settings

If you are still strangled with why won’t my laptop shut down issue, check the settings of your BIOS.

For this, you will have to get into your BIOS and make some alterations in the settings. Just reset the BIOS to default settings.

Go through the manual of the motherboard and with the help of the detailed information you can easily perform the task.

When you will reset the BIOS to default, this issue will get resolved completely. 

Fix 4: Try A Complete Shutdown Process

This is an alternative way to shut down your system without using the Hybrid Shutdown option. You can resolve with the help of the following steps:

Step 1: Go to your desktop and click on a blank space. Now select the New option and from there go to Shortcut.

Step 2: In Type, the location of the item section, enter the following:

shutdown -F -T (any number from 0 and 315360000) -C “Type the message”

Step 3: Now hit the Next button. As per your preference, name the Shortcut and finally hit the Finish option.

Step 4: You can also right-click on the Shortcut option and then open its Properties. Next, change the shortcut icon as you wish.

Then hit the new shortcut button for a complete shutdown. Check whether this workaround has helped you resolve the issue. 

Fix 5: Make Some Alterations To The Intel Management Engine Interface Option

When your laptop refuses to shut down, try to change the Intel Management Engine Interface option that is your power options, and seek a solution.

Follow the process described as under:

Step 1: Go to the Start option and type Device Manager for getting into the window.

Step 2: When you are in the Device Manager, search for Intel(R) Management Engine section. Now click twice for opening the Properties.

Step 3: From the Power Management option go to the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option and uncheck it. Now hit the OK button and save your changes.

You may also need to uninstall the Intel Management Engine Interface. For uninstalling the same, follow the process described below:

From the Device Manager, search for Intel(R) Management Engine option as before and click right on it.

Now choose to Uninstall the device. When you have removed it safely, give your system a fresh restart and check if the problem has got an answer. 

Fix 6: Check Your Audio Device

This shutting down problem may be caused because of the external audio device. In case you are using any USB sound card for enhancement of the audio performance, it might be incompatible with your Windows 10.

For fixing the issue, try disconnecting the sound card you are using from the system. Now try to use the in-built sound card in its place.

But in case you wish to use your prevailing card, make sure you download the upgraded version of the available drivers and check whether this helps. 

Fix 7: Reset The Power Plan

Resetting the power plan and setting it to the default option is a good measure when your Windows 10 laptop won’t shut down.

Follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Go to the Control Panel and move on to the Power Options again. Now check where your current plan is. Then proceed to change the settings of the power plan.

Step 2: Choose options for changing the Advanced Settings options and go to the Restore Plan Defaults feature.

Step 3: Save the changes by hitting the Apply button followed by the OK option.

After you have accomplished the resetting process check if this has done any improvement. 

Fix 8: Clean Up Your Laptop

Check that your laptop is free from dust. Often dust accumulates inside the laptop which creates overheating problems preventing it from shutting down.

Check the temperature reading and in case it exceeds the normal value, cleanse it properly. You may use a cotton cloth and be gentle while cleaning.

In case you are not confident, you may call a technician to do the same. 

Fix 9: Remove The Battery From Your Laptop

You can try this basic step when your device is not shutting down that is to remove the battery from the laptop.

First of all, unplug your system and then remove the battery from the device.

Wait for a couple of minutes before you insert it back into your laptop. Now give your system a fresh restart and check for any improvement.

Fix 10: Update Windows

Updating windows is required to address many problems in the System along with the laptop won’t shut down issue.

In case your windows version is old, it may create a lot of problems.

You can perform this task quite easily with just a few steps mentioned below:

Step 1: First of all, press the Windows button in case your mouse is not working and then type Update. With the arrow key find Check For Updates.

Step 2: Now with the help of the tab key search and find Download Updates and then press the Enter button.

Now, your Windows will proceed to download all the pending updates. Reboot your Windows and after you have rebooted, check whether it has made any improvement.
