With each new update, Discord tries something new to become more popular among the users. Borrowing its base features from Slack, the most popular VoIP application recently added a screen share feature. With this feature, users can now share their screen with their friends on Discord.
Although in beta stage, the screen share is a well-received feature among the users. However, there have been constant reports of the audio not working during screenshare is active. Here, I shall discuss how to fix if you see Discord screen share audio not working on your computer.
Discord Screen Share Audio Not Working
There can be many reasons why you see Discord not sharing audio. The primary reason as reported by many users is outdated drivers, which cause a host of hardware issues. However, you may also see Discord not streaming audio due to permissions not available, application incompatibility, application not registering, and much more.
Solution 1: Incompatible Applications
As mentioned earlier, the screenshare feature is still under development. Right now, the method of pulling the audio during screen share is a bit flawed. Right now, Discord ignores applications which do not produce sound from the window that is utilizing the GPU.
Applications which produce multiple processes for different hardware are incompatible as of now. These may be fixed in a later update, but as of now you will have to switch to a different browser or end such applications while sharing your screen.
Solution 2: Grant Admin Privileges
With updated security features, Windows 10 is much safer when it comes to privacy features. The operating system actively shuts down applications which use advanced system resources for a prolonged period of time. Only the applications with the elevated privileges can use such resources.
Discord’s screenshare is a fairly advanced process, requiring multiple resources to be active at the same time. Therefore, there is a chance that Windows 10 may be blocking the application from accessing the audio services in the normal mode.
To resolve Discord screenshare no audio error, try running the application using admin privileges. Follow these steps for the same:
- If you have the Discord application icon on your desktop, right click on it to reveal the context menu. If not, locate the Start menu entry for the same and right click on it.
- Select Open File location from the context menu.
- In the folder that opens, locate the Discord executable file, and right click on it again.
- Select Properties from the context menu.
- Switch to the Compatibility
- Under the Settings section, check the box next to the following option:
Run this program as an administrator - Click on Apply followed by OK.
Now, try running screenshare again. Your audio error should now be resolved.
Solution 3: Update Device Drivers
If granting admin privileges did not help you, there is a chance that your device drivers may not have the latest patches installed on your computer. Drivers are responsible for transmitting the commands between the operating system and the hardware, so missing or corrupt drivers may be responsible for the Discord screen share audio not working error.
To fix this, update the device drivers. Make sure that the video and sound drivers are updated to the latest version. After updating the drivers, check if the error persists. You should be able to share audio via screen share.
Solution 4: Add Your Application To The Activity Section
Due to the still being in the development phase, there is a chance that Discord does not recognize your game. In such situations, you will need to manually add the game to your activity session. Using this, you can select the application or game that you want Discord to focus on and share the audio from.
This is a fairly easy process, and here are the steps you need to follow:
- Launch the Discord application on your computer.
- Click on the Settings icon in the bottom left corner of the app.
- Under App Settings, click on Game Activity.
- In the right pane, check which application is set as active.
- If no app or game is selected, click on the Add it button.
This will show you the list of active applications. - Here, select your application by clicking on it.
- If you see that the game you want to focus on is already added, remove the application by clicking on the cross that appears on the bar.
- Then, add the application again, and check if the error persists.
Note: If you cannot see the application you want to share, make sure that the application is running. If you still cannot see the application, grant administrative privileges to the app and check if you can see the app. If the error still persists, toggle the overlay and check.
Solution 5: Check If Your Microphone Is Working
If adding the applications to your activity list did not help you as well, you need to check if your microphone is working properly. We have seen many reports where users see Discord screen share audio not working if there is a problem with their microphone or default input device.
Check if your microphone is working without any errors. If you find some issues with your microphone, fix those and check if the Discord error persists. You should be able to share audio now.
Solution 6: Clear Discord Data
If none of the solutions above helped you in solving the Discord screenshare no audio error, the application files itself may have become corrupted due to some reason. This can happen due to incorrect installation, or the files being corrupted due to interference from other applications and Windows updates.
Clear the application data, which will prompt a fresh download of the files from the Discord server. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open a Run dialog by pressing Win + R.
- Type %appdata% and press Enter.
- In the resulting (AppData > Roaming) folder that opens, go back once to open the AppData folder.
- In all the three folders listed here (Local, LocalLow, Roaming), delete all the Discord folders.
- Restart your computer.
After restarting, open Discord and wait while the app downloads the data again. Check if the error persists. The Discord screen share audio not working error should now be fixed.
Solution 7: Reinstall Discord
If clearing the Discord data did not fix this error for you, try reinstalling Discord. This includes uninstalling the application, and removing the residual files before installing a fresh copy of the application. If you do not want to manually do this, check out some third party uninstallers which will do this work for you.
Solution 8: Contact Discord
If none of the solutions above helped you and you still see Discord not sharing audio, the error may be specific to you only. Contact Discord with your error details, and the app development team shall look into the bug, providing you the fixes.
