  • Choose to run Command Prompt as administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt window, enter the following line of commands one by one and press Enter.

  • Now empty the directories storing the WU component’s updated files and rename them.

This will force your OS to have fresh new files. Enter the commands given below in the elevated Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

windows-software-distribution-old-files

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

  • After running the above command now run the following commands. These will re-enable the WU components services:

net start wuauserv

net-start-wuauserv-cmd-command

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net-start-bits-cmd-command

If you use any other antivirus to protect your system, disable that too. Follow the steps to do so:

Here I am showing the steps for Avast antivirus. The steps may differ for other antivirus programs:

  • From the System Tray, right-click on the Avast icon.
  • Select Avast shields control from Avast menu.
  • A side menu will appear. Select how long you want to disable the Avast shields.

  • Confirm your action by clicking on the Yes button.

Avast will be disabled for the specified period you have selected.

Enable Firewall or antivirus as soon as you finish updating your Windows, as your system is vulnerable to threats without them.

8) Run SFC and DISM Scans

If none of the above solutions work, try running the SFC and DISM scans. SFC scan will check for and repair corrupted or missing system files and DISM scan will repair the Windows image.

So, run SFC and DISM scans following this guide. After running the scans, update Windows.
