There are many instances where the users get a distorted screen, where the screen is stretched horizontally or vertically. The stretched display makes the screen appear pixilated as the screen is stretched to match the resolution and size of the monitor.

There are two main reasons why you are seeing this error. Firstly, there may be a resolution mismatch that is causing the pixel displays to go awry, resulting in ‘Windows 10 screen stretched horizontally’.

This is fairly easy to solve, as a simple adjustment in your settings should be able to match the correct monitor size.

Secondly, outdated graphics drivers can cause your operating system to recognize your display to be of the wrong size. This can also occur when you upgrade your monitor to a newer model, and the information is misread.

How To Fix A Stretched Screen Windows 10?

Now that you know why you may be facing this error, you can follow these steps to solve your Windows 10 screen stretched horizontally error.

Solution 1: Adjust Screen Configuration

More often than not, random key presses mess up the screen resolution on your device. This can be annoying as the text on the display becomes impossible to read, damaging your workflow.

To the relief of troubled users, this error is actually fairly easy to solve, as you just have to change the configuration settings for your display. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the desktop to reveal the context menu, and click on Display Settings.
  2. Locate the Resolution drop-down menu.
  3. From the list of supported resolutions, select the one that fits perfectly with the monitor size.

Sometimes, Windows fails to load all the resolutions that can be supported by your display. To load all the supported resolutions, follow these:

  1. Scroll down to Multiple displays section in the right pane.
  2. Click on Advanced Display Settings.

  1. Click on Display adapter properties for <Display name>.
  2. Click on List All Modes.

  1. You will see a list of different resolutions along with the refresh rate of the same. Change these settings according to your hardware specifications and how you see them fit.
  2. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

This should make your screen adjusted to your monitor size, solving the ‘stretched screen Windows 10’ error. However, if this somehow fails to solve your issue, there is a graphics driver mismatch that is causing your issue.

Solution 2: Update Graphics Drivers

This is one of the most common causes that this error can happen. If you have skipped some device driver updates, those outdated drivers can conflict with your hardware and can result in many different errors including this error. You may also be affected if you recently upgraded to an ultra-wide monitor or similar larger displays.

To check and update your device drivers, follow these steps:

  1. Open a Run dialog box by pressing Win + R.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

Devmgmt

  1. This will open the Device Manager.
  2. Here, locate the devices that may be associated with your error e.g. the Graphics card drivers, display adapters drivers, etc.

update_graphics_drivers

  1. Right-click on these devices, and select Update Driver.

The Windows assistant will search for and prompt you to install the latest version of the device drivers.

  1. Restart your system.

If the outdated drivers were causing this error, updating your graphics drivers should solve your ‘screen stretched horizontally Windows 10’ error.

However, if this fails to solve your issue, you may need to roll back updates.

Solution 3: Install Older Graphics Drivers

If you did not upgrade your monitor, and a recent Windows update caused this error on your device, there is a chance that some mismatched graphics is causing this mischief on your device. You need to roll back your driver to an older version so that the compatibility matches that of your hardware.

  1. Open a Run dialog box by pressing Win + R.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
  3. This will open the Device Manager.
  4. Here, locate the Display adapters section.
  5. Right-click on your hardware, and click Uninstall device.
  6. Check the option with Delete the driver software for this device and click on OK.
  7. Restart your computer and Windows will download the correct driver for your device.
  8. If you have an AMD ATI Graphics card, open device manager again after restarting.
  9. Select any device, and then click Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  10. Windows should load a good driver for your ATI graphics card.

Alternatively, click on Update driver and select Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Uncheck the option “Show compatible hardware”. This will display all the available drivers on your computer. Select the previous driver (the one you had before the update) and install it.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t very helpful. How is someone supposed to know which driver was installed previous to the current one? The driver I had installed was from 2018 and the system told me it was the most recent. I tried following solution 3 by uninstalling the monitor and display driver and now I have no display. Windows did not automatically update the driver at all. Moreover, I’ve found a number of people online talking about accidentally uninstalling the wrong driver and ending up with no display.

There ought to be a warning in this article about the possibility of losing one’s display and what to do if that happens. Now I have to go hunting for a solution to a whole new problem, one obviously worse than the original. Hopefully I will find something or we may have to take my husband’s computer to the Geek Squad.

Really, you shouldn’t offer solutions to problems that could potentially create other problems, at least not without fair warning. I followed your instructions in good faith that Windows would automatically install the driver like you said. Please, for the sake of any who come here after me, update your article to include this information! Thank you.
