Gmail is one of the most comprehensive emailing services out there that has millions of daily users. It’s so popular thanks to its reliability, performance, and a wide variety of features. But using too many elements at once can result in sluggish performance and slow loading time.

You may have noticed that, over time, your inbox takes longer and longer to load and refresh. Since many people use Gmail daily, it can become pretty annoying. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to improve its performance. Make sure to follow these pro tips.

    • 0.3 3.   Reduce the Number of Extensions
    • 0.4 4.   Use a VPN When You’re Abroad
    • 0.5 5.   Disable Gmail Labs
    • 0.6 6.   Don’t Display Too Many Messages
    • 0.7 7.   Reduce the Amount of Gmail Categories
  • 1 Bonus: Gmail Shortcuts

1.   Turn Off the Chat Bar

Most users don’t notice that Google Talk always has a chat bar that’s running on the sidebar. It turns on by itself whenever the user logs into their account.

Since not many people use this chat, it won’t hurt to turn it off. It slows down the initial loading process, and it also harms performance. So, turning it off will improve the speed.

You can turn off the chat bar by opening Settings, choosing Chat, selecting the Chat Off option, and then saving the changes.

2.   Be Consistent with Cleaning Your Mailbox

Most users have a lot of relevant emails in their inboxes that they’d like to keep. But having too many emails at once can clog the inbox and cause a significant decrease in performance.

If you have messages that you’d like to get out of the way, but not delete, you can always archive them. Is your inbox full of promotional messages and other irrelevant threads? Then occasionally deleting such messages will help with speeding up your Gmail platform too.

3.   Reduce the Number of Extensions

Extensions are wonderful tools that make our lives so much easier and more convenient. But having too many extensions also results in a sluggish Gmail performance.

Moreover, too many extensions also slow down your whole Google Chrome App. Try to stick to the essentials, and remove the ones that you don’t use as often.

4.   Use a VPN When You’re Abroad

Everyone knows that the internet abroad is usually slow and annoying. It can take ages to open a single window. Moreover, some countries, such as China, completely block their users and tourists from accessing Gmail. To avoid this issue, always use a good VPN solution when traveling. But it can have a toll on your connection too.

To ensure maximum speed, you should buy a premium subscription. They offer the best speed and the most reliable connection. NordVPN is one of the most popular and reliable VPNs out there. But there are many other solutions out there with different pricing models and features.

5.   Disable Gmail Labs

Google offers an exciting feature called Google Labs. It allows users to try out different test projects and functionalities. It can be cool to be a part of this program and try out new features. But bear in mind that it can slow down your Gmail.

You can turn off this option by going to Gmail Settings, opening the Labs section, and disabling all unused features and services.

6.   Don’t Display Too Many Messages

When using your Gmail account, the app allows you to choose the number of messages you’d like to see on a single page. Users can choose between 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, or 100 emails per page. When there are too many messages displayed at once, Gmail can become sluggish, and it might take longer to load.

You can change this by going to Settings, opening the General tab, locating the Maximum Page Size option, and choosing a lower number. Then, scroll down a bit and click Save.

7.   Reduce the Amount of Gmail Categories

Gmails allows users to sort their email in different categories, namely:

  • Primary
  • Social
  • Promotions
  • Updates
  • Forums

This is a handy feature that allows users to have a cleaner and more organized inbox. But having too many different tabs can result in a slow interface also.

You can reduce the number of tabs by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner, opening the Configure Inbox option, unchecking the categories you’d like to remove, and then clicking the Save button.

Bonus: Gmail Shortcuts

Most people use Gmail every day. So performance and speed are crucial. By using the tips mentioned above, you can ensure a smooth and effortless performance.

Here’s a farewell tip that doesn’t impact the performance speed but can help you work and operate faster within the Gmail platform – shortcuts.

You can turn on the keyboard shortcuts option by going to Settings, opening the General tab, finding the Keyboard shortcuts option, and turning it on.

Voila, now you’re a true Gmail professional.
