How To Keep Music Playing When Laptop Is Closed?

Updated: April 13, 2020 by Prataan Chakraborty

Laptops are these days more than just a work machine. People use their laptops not only for work on the go but at homes as media centers as well. This is facilitated by the amazing displays and loud and good quality speakers that laptop manufacturers put on their devices.

However, with Windows 10, you will usually have to keep staring at the screen if you wish to keep playing music. This is because your laptop will enter the Sleep state automatically when you close the lid of your computer. The Sleep mode is a power option designed to save battery power for your device.

If you are wondering how to keep music playing when the laptop is closed in Windows 10, here is a simple solution that will help you achieve this functionality.

To keep the laptop on when closed in Windows 10, you will need to change what happens when you put the lid down. There is an option in the control panel, that lets you achieve this functionality very easily.

What this feature essentially does, is it changes the output result of the Microswitch. When you close the lid, a micro switch is activated that triggers the sleep mode. However, if you configure this switch to do nothing, you should be able to keep playing music even when the laptop is closed.

To change what happens when you close the lid, follow these steps:

  1. Open control panel, either from a Run dialog or from the desktop shortcut if you have the icon enabled.
  2. Change the View by to Small icons if you see it set to Category.
  3. Click on Power options from the list of available Control Panel items.
Note: In Windows 10, you can directly search for control panel items from Windows Search (Win + S). simply search for ‘change what happens when I close the lid’ in Windows search.
  4. From the left pane additional menu, click on the following option:
Choose what closing the lid does

  1. In the next window, go to the Define power buttons
  2. Next to the When I close the lid option, change the values to Do Nothing from the drop-down menus for the same.

  1. Click on Save changes once you are done changing the power settings.
