How to Customize Your Windows Screen for Better Eye Comfort

Whether you’re working late into the night, dealing with poor lighting, or simply need better visual clarity, adjusting these settings can significantly reduce eye strain and improve your overall screen experience.

Follow the steps provided below to customize your Windows 11 screen to provide better eye comfort.

1. Adjust the Text and Font Sizes

The first thing you can do is to make text easier to read can significantly reduce eye strain.

  • To adjust the text size, press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
  • Then go to “Accessibility,” then select “Text Size.”
  • Slide the control to the right to increase text size and click “Apply.” If you prefer a different font, go to “Personalization” then “Fonts.”
  • You can browse and install fonts as per your preference and comfort.

2. Switch Between Dark and Light Modes

Switching between light and dark modes based on your environment helps to minimize eye fatigue.

  • Open Settings, go to “Personalization” then “Color.”
  • Choose between Light or Dark mode from the dropdown. If you’d like, you can also select “Custom” to have different modes for apps and the system.

3. Modify the Mouse Pointer Style & Size

If your cursor is too small or hard to see, adjusting its size and style can help reduce eye strain.

  • To do this, right-click the Start button, select “Settings,” and navigate to the “Accessibility” tab. Then, click on “Mouse Pointer & Touch.”
  • Use the slider to adjust the pointer size and choose a more visible or intuitive style.
  • Avoid making the cursor excessively large, as it may negatively affect your experience.

4. Activate the Night Light Feature

Reducing blue light exposure can help with eye comfort, especially in low-light settings.

  • Open Settings and go to “System” then “Display.”
  • You can adjust the display brightness as per your comfort zone.
  • You can then turn on the “Night Light” toggle and adjust the warmth to your liking. You can also select Set hours and set a preferable time slot from here.

5. Set Up a Screen Magnifier

If some elements are too small, using a screen magnifier can help you zoom in for better clarity.

  • In “Settings,” navigate to “Accessibility” then select “Magnifier” and toggle it on. You can customize the zoom level and choose between full-screen, docked, or lens modes.
  • You can use the keyboard shortcuts Windows + Plus (+) to zoom in, and Windows + Minus (-) to zoom out.

6. Adjust Display Resolution

To adjust the resolution for better eye comfort, follow these steps:

  • In the Windows Settings menu, select System then click on Display.
  • Scroll down until you see the section labeled Display Resolution.
  • You will see a dropdown menu under Display Resolution. Click on the dropdown, and you will see various available resolution options here.
  • The system will recommend the Recommended resolution, which is typically the native resolution of your display. If you want larger icons and text, select a lower resolution than the recommended one.
  • After selecting the desired resolution, click Apply. Your screen will adjust to the new resolution, and you’ll see a preview.

Windows will ask you to confirm the new resolution. If everything looks good, click Keep changes. If you don’t like the result, you can select Revert to go back to the previous resolution.

7. Tweak Scaling Settings

Changing the scaling settings can make text and icons easier to read without individual adjustments.

  • Open Windows Settings, then go to “System” then, “Display.”
  •  In the “Scale” dropdown, experiment with different percentages to increase the size of on-screen elements.
  • You may need to try a couple of percentages to match your preferences. This can make your display more comfortable to read, especially on smaller screens.

8. Use Color Filters

Color filters can help individuals with color blindness or visual impairments and improve overall visual comfort.

  • Go to “Settings” then select “Accessibility” then “Color Filters” and toggle the “Color Filters” option on.
  • Choose the appropriate filter for your needs, such as red-green or blue-yellow, or experiment with other filters like grayscale or inverted colors.

9. Use High Contrast Themes

High-contrast themes make text and interface elements stand out more, improving readability and reducing strain.

  • Open Settings, go to “Accessibility” then select “Contrast Themes.”
  • Now select your preferred theme from the dropdown menu. Click “Apply” to make the change.
  • Small adjustments to your screen settings can go a long way in reducing eye strain, improving comfort, and boosting productivity. Along with these settings, ensure good lighting, and consider using blue light-filtering glasses when appropriate.
