With zip files, people can share large files without worrying about space constraints. While you can always use online compression tools, these usually involve uploading your files online, which can be seen as a data privacy risk. Luckily, you can create a zip file right from the Windows folder context menu.

First, let us take a look at how you can use Windows to create a compressed folder. Follow these steps for the same:

  1. Open File Explorer (shortcut Win + E) and navigate to the folder that contains the files and folders that you wish to compress.
  2. Use Ctrl + click to select multiple files, and select all the files and folders that you wish to compress.
  3. Keep the Ctrl key pressed and right click to reveal the context menu.
  4. Here, hover over Send to > in order to reveal additional menu.
  5. Select Compressed (zipped) folder from the context menu.
  6. Windows will create a .zip file for you, with the name section highlighted. Enter a name for the zip file that you created.
  7. Press Enter to create the zip file with the desired name.

Although Windows automatically suggests a name based on the names of the files and folders that you add, you can choose a custom name if you find the name incorrect.

Add A File To Zip Folder

Windows 10 handles zip folders very efficiently. This extends to the fact that adding a file or folder to a zip file is amazingly easy. All you need to do is drag and drop the file or folder into the compress folder Windows 10.

How To Unpack A Zip File In Windows?

For extracting a zip file as well, you do not need third party software as Windows 10 has built in support for extracting zip files. To unpack zip files, you will find the appropriate options as follows:

  1. Right click on the .zip file that you wish to unpack.
  2. Select Extract All from the context menu.
  3. On the next window that appears, select the location of where you wish to extract the files.
  4. Finally, click on the Extract button to extract your files.

The obvious limitation to this feature is the fact that Windows 10 only supports a few compression standards. If you wish to get additional support, you will require the use of third party compression software. You can choose from premium services like WinZip, or free open source apps like PeaZip.
