To fix troubles with Microsoft Word quickly and efficiently, you can use Microsoft Word Repair tool. The software is designed to recover damaged Word files and avoid errors when working with the documents.
What To Do If Can’t Remove Highlighting In Word
In this article I can provide you some options to get rid of the can’t remove highlighting in word issue.
You have few options to repair this. Microsoft Word has the clear formatting option that will remove the highlighting.
Another option you have from your home button option is your No Colour option.
Besides, you also have the cut and paste option that can remove your highlighting. Now, let us discuss the processes mentioned in detail.
Solution 1: Choose Clear Formatting Option
When you are thinking how to get rid of highlight on word, select the clear formatting option. The highlighting of the text may be character shading.
You have many options in MS Word to format your text. First of all, just select your highlighted text and then search for the Clear Formatting option.
Once you get it hit the button on your Home tab. Besides, you have another option.
Hold the Ctrl button and press Space for removing the format. Just try this option to get rid of the highlighted format.
Solution 2: Choose No Color Option
If Microsoft word highlighting won’t go away, select the no colour option for the Theme colour.
Word provides you the Theme shading option for adding background colour to the text and this is similar to highlighting.
So, here I recommend you remove the theme Shading option. Follow the process mentioned below:
Step 1: Choose the shaded text first and then go to your Home tab.
Step 2: Now hit on the arrow next to the shading option for opening the respective palette.
Step 3: Next choose No Color for removing this shading.
You also have another choice to remove the shading by pressing Ctrl key and Q hotkey.
Solution 3: Make Some Adjustments In The Default Paste Setting
For your Microsoft Word you can also choose to make some alterations in the default paste settings.
This way the specific highlighted text will not have the source formatting. You can get the particular text copied and delete it.
Then paste the same into your document. This will paste the text as a plain one. Here I am describing the process how to do it. Follow the provided guidelines:
Step 1: First of all, go to your Home tab. Then choose the arrow provided on your paste button.
Step 2:Click it and choose the Set Default Paste. Now this will open up a window.
Step 3: Next from the window of Cut, copy and paste options, choose Keep Text Only option. For confirmation hit the OK button.
Step 4: Now, copy the above-mentioned highlighted portion of the text by pressing Ctrl + C.
Step 5: Delete the text that you have copied and hold Ctrl button and then press V for pasting the portion into the document.
This will help you to paste the text back without any formatting.
Solution 4: Cut The Text And Then Paste It Back Into The Document
You can also try this option where you can cut the text and then paste the same back into the document with the paste option.
This will also help you get rid of the can’t remove highlighting in word problem.
When you copy and paste the text, the highlighted option gets removed and your text gets pasted as a plain text without any highlights. Follow the given steps to do so:
Step 1: First of all, select the specific text from the document. Then go to the Home tab and cut the text with the scissor icon as shown in the picture.
Step 2: Now select the position where you wish to paste the text back by pointing the cursor.
Step 3: Now go back to your home tab and then choose the paste option. Expand the option and from there, choose Paste Special.
Choose the Unformatted Text option from the other displayed options.
Step 4: Hit the OK option and you will get the text without any formatting done as a plain text.
Now check whether Microsoft word highlighting won’t go away issue is solved.

Been using Word for ten years and didn’t realise I had a ‘delete formatting’ button. Can’t believe I went through so much unnecessary frustration for so long. Thank you so much!

STILL doesn’t solve my problem Word for Mac. Highlighting seemingly came out of nowhere and annoyingly re-appears after I have cleared formatting and just select bold. If it is such a good product why would this simple problem be so hard to fix and require troubleshooting so many possibilities to try and fix it.

Hi,
Solution 4 worked for me – except that the highlighting jumped back onto the previous word. I applied Solution 4 again to that word and the highliighting jumped again to the previous word!
The other curious thing is that the highlighted word (always purple) has a vertical bar before and after it].
