Updated: June 23, 2023 by Sanmay Chakrabarti

VPNs have become well known in the last couple of years due to the increasing cyber security threats. Even the most non-tech-savvy people have heard about VPNs.

But a common question I keep hearing is how safe VPNs are and whether they are legal. Being tired of answering the same question repeatedly, I have finally decided to write it all down so that I can share this instead. So, here is everything you need to know about VPNs before using them!

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Most of you already have an idea of what VPNs do, which essentially protects your data by providing a false front. How VPNs work is, it establishes a protected and private connection when the user is accessing the internet.

This way, you can make your browsing private, hide your IP address and stop your internet provider from tracking you. Pretty neat, isn’t it? Whenever someone checks your internet connection, they will only find scrambled data (gibberish) and won’t know what you are actually doing.

Are VPNs Safe To Use?

Yes, 9 out of 10 times, using a VPN is safe, only if you pick the correct ones. And most of the popular ones are the correct ones. When choosing a VPN, you must ensure it includes robust safety features like IP address encryption and two-factor authentication.

The 1 out of 10 times are the VPNs that claim to be VPNs but don’t provide any data encryption and instead use your data for nefarious reasons, like selling them, which is a massive security issue. However, these are super rare, and you won’t come across them unless you pick a shady website to download your VPN.

VPNs are essential for keeping your data safe and protected. Any well-known VPNs like Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN are excellent, each providing special features other than all the essential ones that almost all VPNs offer.

Are VPNs Legal?

Yes and no! VPNs are legal in most countries. Some countries have restricted VPNs to varying degrees, and very few have outright banned them.

Countries like Belarus, Iraq, North Korea, Oman, and Turkmenistan have made VPNs illegal. Countries like China, Iran, Russia, Turkey, The UAE, Uganda, India, Venezuela, and Egypt have restricted the use of VPNs.

So, VPNs are entirely legal to use unless you are from the countries mentioned earlier. In countries like India and Turkey, VPNs are basically legal but restricted to some degree for combatting terrorism and other illegal activities.

However, if you want to use VPNs to bypass geo-blocks, which attract a lot of users to VPNs these days, you are still likely breaking the Terms and Conditions of that particular app, which might not lead to legal issues but can definitely lead to account bans.

Should You Use A VPN?

Yes, you should use VPNs. With each passing year and advancement of technology, we are getting more connected, which is a fantastic achievement, but it also has drawbacks. Losing privacy is one of the core problems. Your data is the new currency, and you must keep it safe.

VPNs are not complete protection for your data. You need to ensure various other factors on top of using a good VPN to create a protected space truly.

However, most people don’t need that many complications and can use VPNs and maybe an excellent firewall to have protection against most threats.
